Devon Rex Cat Breed
đŸ HISTORY OF DEVON REX
In 1960 the first Devon Rex was born in a litter of wild cats to a curly coated father and straight-coated mother living near a disused tin mine in Devonshire England. This landmark kitten stood out from his littermates with his large ears, big oval eyes, refined cheekbones and his curly coat. Kirlee, as he became known was discovered and adopted by a local cat enthusiast - Beryl Cox who lived nearby and christened him Kirlee after his curly coat.
10 years prior to Kirlee's arrival another curly coated cat was discovered in Cornwall England and christened the Cornish Rex. Originally it was thought that Kirlee was related to the Cornish Rex however through breeding it was established that Kirlee carried a completely new Rex gene - the Devon Rex!
đŸ CHARACTERISTICS
The first thing one notices when meeting a Devon Rex for the first time is their impish face! The Devon Rex has large low ears with delightful little fur tuffs a top prominent cheeks and large wide-set oval eyes which give them their pixie like appearance.
The Devon coat can be denser around the tail, head, legs and ears with a fine wavy covering on the body which comes in a variety of colours - solids, smokes, tortoise-shells, tabbies and pointed (Si-Rex) all available.
Devonâs have hardly any guard hairs - just velvety soft waves with warmth to the touch you wonât believe! A Devon moults very little after their first year and will require only minimal hand grooming through their life. Sufferers of cat allergies will often be able to live with the Devon because of the Devon's minimal guard hairs and minimal shedding.
đŸ PURRSONALITY
The Devon is an Intelligent, curious cat that will act like a kitten all their life, following you around, fetching whatever you throw for them (or what misses the bin!) and wagging their tails in moments of happiness. The Devon can be taught to walk on a harness and love it and many are "piggyback riders" riding around on their ownerâs shoulders.
Your Devon will meet you at the door after a day away at work and greet you with his delightful chatter. Devon's talk in enchanting subdued chirps, chortles and trills with a purr to drown out all other noise!
The Devon's devotion to it's people also means that bath time in a Devon owned home may never be quite the same - they love water and have been known to join their owners in the shower or bath rather than miss out on time spent with their people.
